From the class of 2013, PUC alumna Darlene Teddy graduated with an environmental studies degree and went on to graduate school in dentistry. With her goal of attending Loma Linda University, Darlene knew PUC would provide a strong science foundation and increase her chances of getting into LLU’s School of Dentistry. She also appreciated the natural environment around PUC.
Since her time at PUC and graduate school, Darlene has gotten married and bought their first home in Nevada, where they live with their two kids and two dogs.
What inspired you to go into dentistry? Did you know you always wanted to be a dentist?
I really enjoy working with my hands, but I still wanted to do something in healthcare. I decided on dentistry because dentists have a great work-life balance while still being fulfilling. I’ve wanted to be a dentist since I was in middle school, when I had braces and spent a lot of time at my dentist’s office, and everyone there seemed so happy and enjoyed what they did.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
I really like taking care of patients and educating them! I find it very rewarding when they feel comfortable with me and learn new things about their dental health. I also like the satisfaction of completing a case and having a great outcome!
What did you enjoy the most during your time, and what are your favorite memories?
I enjoyed the location and the opportunity to explore the Bay Area while living there. My favorite memories were the activities we did with clubs, such as ski trips, feeding the homeless, and visiting various churches in the area. I was also part of the Senate for a couple of years, and it was a good learning experience.
How did PUC impact your future and career?
I learned that every experience shapes you, and it taught me to rely on myself. The good and the bad are part of your story, and all we can do is learn from it. There is no point in stressing over things we can’t control, but we can only control how we react to what’s thrown our way.
Was there a specific faculty or staff member who helped shape your time at PUC?
Dr. Hayes! I’ll always cherish all the classes I took from him. I love his enthusiasm and passion when teaching, and the super fun yet educational field trips. They’re so memorable, and I still talk fondly about him and my experience in his classes.
What skills or lessons did you learn from PUC that you still carry today?
How to drive safely up and down a mountain. I grew up in a metropolitan environment, and being at PUC, surrounded by nature and with access to the Back 40, taught me to appreciate God’s creation.
Did you have a favorite restaurant or cafe in the Napa Valley?
Guiginis! They have the best sandwiches! I love the sprouts and the guigini juice. Perfect combination.
What’s your favorite way to unwind and recharge after a busy week?
Watching my favorite TV shows with a big bowl of hot ramen. Then, a good sleep on my Tempur-Pedic mattress!
What advice do you have for students who want to get into dentistry school?
Shadow a dentist and really observe their day-to-day. Dental school is expensive, so you really want to be passionate about your job! There are aspects of dentistry that can be rewarding and aspects that can be mentally and physically draining. Whatever your heart has a passion for, pursue it, because studying it will be much easier if you have enthusiasm for it.
