From Hacienda Heights, Rose Portillo is one of PUC’s newest Pioneers. A freshman psychology student, she plays center, middle, and forward for the women’s soccer team. Rose chose PUC over other colleges and universities because of the “welcoming environment”. “The first time I got here, I knew I would grow not only as an athlete but as a person,” she said. “Attending PUC benefited my education and future career because the small classes make it really easy to connect with my classmates and professor.”
How has becoming a college athlete impacted your life?
Becoming a college athlete impacted my life by helping me grow mentally and physically. It also made college easier for me because I made friends before school started.
What values have you learned by being on the team?
Some values I have learned from being on the team are accountability, discipline, and time management.
What’s your pregame ritual?
My pregame ritual is to relax and listen to music.
Who is your favorite athlete?
My favorite athlete would be Kobe Bryant because of his work ethic, aka the Mamba mentality.
What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers community?
My favorite thing about being part of the Pioneers community is how supportive and kind everyone is. It makes me feel at home and welcomed.
How do you bond with your teammates outside of practices and games?
I bond with my teammates outside of practices by studying and doing homework together. We also go to town together and do grocery shopping.
Can you share any advice for high school students interested in becoming college athletes?
My advice to high school students is to stay on top of their work and avoid procrastinating.
Outside of sports, what are other things you are passionate about?
I am passionate about my family, friends, and helping others.
