Makena Driver is from Winters, CA, and majors in social work with a minor in art. Coming from a public high school, receiving the Maxwell Scholarship meant she could come to PUC and focus on her studies without having to worry about the money aspect. “Receiving the PUC scholarship was an answer to prayers as I was deciding between two colleges and was looking to God for an answer to which college He wanted me to go to start my journey into adulthood,” said Makena. “Receiving the Maxwell Scholarship, I felt, was Him telling me to go here.
What are your other reasons for choosing to attend PUC?
I will forever be grateful for the opportunities that are now open to me because of this blessing. PUC was the right choice for me because I wanted real social connections and the community that PUC was able to give that to me. It was also very important for the college I chose to support me in my religious connection and to be around like-minded people.
What do you do when you don’t feel motivated?
It can be very easy to feel unmotivated, so when I do, I call a friend who I know will support me and help me get back in the rhythm. I also take a second to breathe and give myself the break that being unmotivated is telling me I need.
When you aren’t studying, what kinds of activities or hobbies do you enjoy?
In my free time, I greatly enjoy hiking and spending time in nature, surrounding myself with God’s creations. I enjoy playing board games, reading, and hanging out with friends any chance I get.
If you had one piece of advice to give academy or high school students, what would it be?
To those who are in high school or academy, my advice to you is to try your best even when it doesn’t seem to be worth it anymore. There came a point in high school when I wanted to stop trying too hard, I would look around me and see my friends and other high schoolers putting in minimum effort, partying, and having the best time; while I was studying, but it was worth it. Know that trying your hardest, even on the simplest things, makes a huge difference and can change your life. So, keep going even when it gets hard, and God will give you the strength you need to carry on.
