Whether you have finalized your roommate for the upcoming school year or not, you should get to know your roommate before school starts. Even if you’ve known your roommate for a long time, living together might be
Start With The Basics
Introduce yourself to your roommate if you haven’t already. Start with the basics by asking your roommate where they’re from and what their major is. Make your roommate feel more comfortable with you by sharing some facts about yourself and strike up a conversation from there.
Connect On Social Media
After introducing yourself, ask if it’s okay to connect with them on social media. It’s okay if you don’t feel comfortable asking that, but you two might already have mutual friends through your classmates. Connecting on social media could help you form a stronger friendship.
Ask Good Questions
Besides the basic questions, ask some good questions to get a sense of who your roommate is. Like their favorite music, movies, or shows. Find out what their hobbies are and see if you two have something in common to bond over. If you need ideas on what questions to ask, check out our blog that has a list of questions to ask your roommate. (Link blog: Questions To Ask Your Future Roommate)
Have Catch-Up Sessions
Since you two aren’t currently living together, have weekly catch-up sessions. In the dorms, you’d be seeing each other and catching up. For now, meet over video chat or check-in with each other over text if that suits you best. Catching up allows you two to maintain a relationship and reminds you that you are not alone on your college journey.
Getting to know your roommate now will make the transition later on much easier once you live together. It won’t be awkward because you’ve already established a relationship. Don’t hold back from getting to know your roommate because it will make a huge difference in your college experience.
