Tips for Effective Studying

Every student studies differently- and finding the best studying methods can be an ongoing process. Knowing what study methods work for you helps avoid frustration and saves time when preparing for exams or quizzes. If you need other ways to help you study, here are some tips for effective studying.

Set A Schedule

It’s easy to make a schedule, but sticking to it is the challenge. You might have a habit of procrastinating so setting a schedule can help you stay on track. Be specific on what time each day you devote to your studies and how much you’ll need for each subject.

Find Your Study Method

Figure out what helps you study effectively. Whether that’s writing notes down from your readings, studying out loud, color coding, making flashcards, joining a study group, etc. Whatever helps you remember class material and keeps you motivated, stick with that method. If you need music or background noise, use that too. Just make sure it doesn’t distract you.

Silence Your Phone

We all know how long we can spend on our phones. That’s why it’s good to silence your phone while studying so you don’t have any distractions and can stay focused. If you tend to have a lot of notifications, turn your do not disturb on.

Start With The Tough Stuff

Start with your harder classes because those will be more time-consuming. If you don’t work on your harder assignments till later in the day or night, it’ll take way more mental energy and time.

Pace Yourself

Study at your own pace. Take your time and don’t think you have to rush through each assignment or chapter. If you rush, you won’t have an effective study session. Especially for your harder classes, you want to devote more time studying for those classes.

Snack on Brain Food

You need to keep your energy up for all that studying you’re doing. Snack while you work or take a break to eat. As much as you want to eat a bag of chips, go for snacks that will keep you motivated to work and not leave you groggy or sleepy.

Relax & Rest

Studying takes a lot of brainpower, so make sure you take a moment to relax and get a good night’s rest. If you’re feeling drained and exhausted, you won’t be able to comprehend everything you’re studying. Your body needs rest and if you aren’t getting enough sleep, you won’t be able to remember what you studied.
