Thriving This Winter: A Guide to Protecting Your Mental Health
For many students, the winter season can be difficult and affect one’s mental health with shorter days, longer nights, and cold weather. If you feel this time of the year affects you, here are some ways to protect your mental health all winter long.
Maintain Healthy Habits
While the weather can be inconsistent this time of the year, stay consistent with the healthy habits you have. Maintain your routine and continue any hobbies or activities you like to do between or after classes. Don’t forget to add joy to your daily life because of those small things in your day that will support your mental health.
Take Advantage of PUC’s Student Wellness Center
Remember when you feel you are struggling and feeling overwhelmed that PUC’s Student Wellness Center has licensed counselors ready to support you. Visit their website to learn more about what they offer and schedule time to meet a counselor who will help you face any issues.
Engage in Outdoor Activities
If you like engaging in outdoor activities such as snowboarding, skiing, or sledding, grab your friends and hit the slopes. Students in the past have gone in groups to Lake Tahoe, splitting costs or bringing their own equipment to save money while enjoying some winter fun.
Enjoy Indoor Activities
Have a game night or play indoor sports to stay active and connected with others to cope with any negative emotions you may be feeling this season. Even spending 30 minutes at the gym will positively impact your mood and mental health. Move in whatever way is comfortable and fun for you to keep your body and brain active.
