Abby Suttan chose to major in strategic communications because it provides a wide range of opportunities. From working in sports media and public relations to healthcare HR or public relations, this degree allows her to explore and work in many industries while helping and connecting with others, which she loves.
When she first came to PUC, Abby enrolled in the nursing program but realized that career path was not her passion and switched to communications. She considered transferring to another school but built strong friendships on campus and felt a strong sense of community that kept her at PUC. Now, as a junior, Abby looks back at her decision to stay, as it has been one of her best decisions.
What do you value the most about your program?
Since our department is relatively small, I receive constant support from my professors and advisors. I’ve built great relationships with my instructors because I take many classes with them, and that personal connection makes a huge difference. What I value most is the close-knit, student-focused environment where I feel genuinely supported in my academic and career goals.
How do you receive support from your department?
The faculty in my department are always available to help, whether through one-on-one advising, career guidance, or simply answering questions about class material. My professors and advisors provide valuable insights into internship opportunities and career paths, helping me prepare for future experiences.
They genuinely care about our success and are always willing to offer support and encouragement. I also appreciate the hands-on learning opportunities in my classes, which give me practical skills for my future career.
How has studying at PUC benefited your education, future, and personal growth?
PUC has given me academic knowledge and hands-on experience that will be invaluable in my career. Beyond that, it has helped me grow personally through leadership opportunities, teamwork, and learning how to balance multiple responsibilities. The small class sizes have allowed me to engage deeply in discussions, and the supportive environment has helped me develop confidence in my skills.
Is there anything about your program that surprised you or didn’t expect?
I was surprised by how much hands-on experience we get in our classes. I expected a lot of theory, but I’ve also worked on real-world projects, learned practical skills like crisis communication and marketing strategies, and gained insight into various career paths. The program is much more dynamic than I initially thought.
How do you stay motivated through your studies?
I stay motivated by focusing on my long-term career goals and reminding myself why I chose this path in the first place. As a first-generation college student, I also feel a deep sense of responsibility to finish strong for my family. Their support and sacrifices inspire me to work hard and make the most of my education.
Additionally, I stay engaged by collaborating with my classmates, getting involved in hands-on projects, and leaning on the supportive community at PUC. Having encouraging professors and friends helps keep me on track and pushes me to keep striving for success.
What class from your program have you taken that every student should take regardless of major?
I think every student, regardless of major, should take Organizational Communication. No matter what career path you choose, you’ll be part of an organization, whether it’s a workplace, a church, or a community group.
This class teaches valuable skills like effective teamwork, leadership, conflict resolution, and how communication shapes organizational culture. Understanding how to navigate group dynamics and communicate professionally is essential for success in any field.
What do you appreciate the most about being a part of the Pioneers community?
The sense of support and belonging. PUC has a strong community where students, faculty, and staff genuinely care about each other. People lift each other in academics, athletics, or campus events. That makes a huge difference in the college experience.
Can you give any advice to high school students who are interested in pursuing their major? What should they expect or prepare for?
If interested in Strategic Communications, be ready to develop strong writing, public speaking, and problem-solving skills. Communication is at the core of every industry, so learning how to adapt your message for different audiences is key. Expect to work on real-world projects, collaborate with others, and think critically about media and messaging.
I also recommend staying informed about current trends in digital media, marketing, and public relations; communication is constantly evolving, and keeping up with new tools and strategies will give you an edge. Finally, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, whether it is through networking, gaining hands-on experience, or getting involved in campus media or leadership opportunities that will help you make the most of this major.
