Faces of PUC: Emily Lalas

Junior biology and music major Emily Lalas comes from a long line of PUC graduates. Since she was a newborn, she visited the campus often as her parents and grandparents were alumni, with her grandpa also being a former academic dean.

Emily calls PUC a very familiar place that feels like home. “I love all the nature to explore and having seclusion that allows me to focus on my relationship with God and others in the community,” she shared.

What do you like the most about your program?

Being in both the Biology and Music departments provides a variety of opportunities that fulfill different aspects of my life. In the Biology department, I appreciate how all the professors of the school of sciences have a genuine desire for the success of their students. All the science classes I’m taking (or have taken) have been very challenging in many different ways, but I feel supported throughout all of it. It is fascinating to be in a major that reflects the creativity and complexity of God, whether that be Dr. Vance describing the complicated systems of the human body or Professor Wyrick showing us how amazing plants are.

In terms of the music department, I have so many fun memories there, and definitely feels like a safe escape for me to destress and become more prominent and skilled in both piano and clarinet. I love the joy, excitement, and bubbling passion evoked by my fellow students, Dr. Davis and Professor Ronnie, and being able to share that with them.

What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers family?

PUC is home to some of the most genuine students, faculty, and staff I have met. Despite many people coming from different walks of life, I always experience Jesus in everyone, whether that be little or small things and whether it is realized or not. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to meet so many people who both minister to me and allow me to minister to them in a variety of ways.

Are there any events or activities this school year you are looking forward to?

I’m going to be biased, but I am very excited about the end-of-quarter Vox Pro Musica and PUC Orchestra concert. I am in the orchestra, and I am very excited to perform the pieces Dr. Davis has chosen for us. She has definitely picked pieces that are quite challenging but will sound awesome in the end and it will be great to see all that hard work paid off. I’m also excited to see what Vox Pro is doing, as there is a lot of variety during the performances!

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

It is hard to decide, but I would go with the Philippines. My dad is from there and always told me and my brother stories about his childhood there. I also know there are a lot of fun activities there, the one highest on my bucket list is swimming with whale sharks in the crystal clear waters! I would also like to eat some of the tropical fruit my dad raves about.

What is something you’re passionate about?

I am passionate about using the gifts and talents God has given me to bless those around me, as well as being a witness to the gifts and talents of those around me. I have been given many opportunities to do that around campus.

Music is a major passion of mine as it is the area of my life that allows me to be the most expressive. In a sense, it brings fulfillment to my mental, spiritual, and even physical well-being. Those of you who play an instrument will know that it can be a workout to play at times.

In terms of my mental health, I have an outlet to get my emotions out, and it gives me time to think as I often daydream as I play the piano. The spiritual aspect goes back to the gifts and talents, as I am inspired to use this God-given talent to bless others and express his beauty.

Do you have a favorite restaurant in the Napa Valley? What is your order recommendation?

While Gott’s is up there on the list for me, I would have to go with Tra Vigne. I have a personal connection to that place since it is where my parents went on their first date while they were students here many years ago. My favorite order is the fungi pizza and garlic rolls. I highly recommend it!

How would you describe your perfect weekend at PUC?

A perfect weekend for me involves going to church, socializing with some friends and community members afterward, and either taking a nap or going to the Back 40, especially if it is raining. Rainy days in the Back 40 or Linda Falls are something I highly recommend. The rest of the weekend is usually up for spontaneous adventures, but a special treat is when my parents and brother visit with our dogs. It’s the best!
