Financial Aid Q&A with Finance Director Freddy Whiteside

PUC offers a highly personalized financial aid experience. The finance team works one-on-one with students and families to maximize aid eligibility and help reduce out-of-pocket costs. More than 90% of students receive financial aid, whether through scholarships, grants, loans, or work-study programs. Even families with higher incomes can qualify for non-need-based aid, such as unsubsidized federal loans and merit scholarships – it is still worth completing the FAFSA.

The college’s commitment to affordability is reflected in generous institutional scholarships, tailored payment plans, and a deep understanding of both federal and private funding resources. Students who apply to PUC can expect to receive their financial aid award letter within 2-3 weeks after the Student Finance Office has received their FAFSA and required documents.

At PUC, their financial advisors understand how overwhelming the financial process can be. Finance Director Freddy Whiteside answered common questions students and families ask to learn more about making higher education possible at PUC.

What financial advice do you have for students and families when preparing for college?

Be proactive and informed. Ask questions, review your award letters carefully, and understand the difference between grants, loans, and scholarships. Also, budget for indirect costs like books, transportation, and personal expenses.

How can high school students and their families financially prepare for college tuition?

Start saving early if possible, research scholarship opportunities in advance, and complete the FAFSA as soon as it opens. Many scholarships are available to high school juniors and seniors—don’t wait until senior year!

What do you think is the most underutilized financial aid resource?

Private scholarships. There are thousands of community-based, corporate, and nonprofit scholarships that go unclaimed each year. Sites like Fastweb and Scholarships.com are great places to start.

How can students apply for financial aid?

Start by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov, with  PUC’s school code: 001258. We recommend applying as early as possible after the FAFSA opens each year to ensure you get priority access to funding.

What important deadlines are coming up this year for scholarships and financial aid?

  • FAFSA Priority Deadline: March 2
  • PUC Scholarship Applications: Vary by program, but many close in early spring

How can students work out a payment plan with PUC?

PUC offers monthly payment plans through our Student Financial Services Office. These plans allow families to spread the cost of tuition and fees over several months rather than paying a lump sum. You can set up a plan by contacting our office directly or visiting puc.edu/admissions/finance

What renewable scholarships does PUC offer?

PUC offers a variety of renewable scholarships, including our Merit Scholarships (based on GPA), Leadership Scholarships, and Academic Department Awards. Many are renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains academic progress.

What website do you recommend to students and parents who might be overwhelmed with the financial aid process or are going through it for the first time?

We always recommend studentaid.gov. It’s the official U.S. Department of Education site, providing step-by-step guides, videos, and FAQs. For PUC-specific help, visit puc.edu/admissions/finance

What happens if a student’s financial situation changes during the school year?

Students should contact our office immediately. Significant changes such as job loss, medical expenses, or other unexpected hardships may qualify for a professional judgment review, which could lead to adjustments in financial aid eligibility.

How much access do parents or guardians have to their students’ financial records?

Due to FERPA regulations, students must grant written permission before we can share financial records with parents or guardians. Students can complete a FERPA release form through our office to authorize this access.

For students who want to study abroad, how does that affect their financial aid status?

Financial aid may still apply for study abroad, depending on the program and type of aid. Federal and State aid, as well as some institutional scholarships, can often be used. We recommend meeting with a financial aid advisor before committing to a program to understand your eligibility fully.

What campus or local jobs are available for students?

PUC offers a robust student employment program with opportunities in nearly every department, including admissions, library services, residence halls, and campus ministries. Local businesses in Angwin and neighboring towns also occasionally offer part-time work for students with transportation.

To reach the student financial services office, you can call them at 707-965-7200 or email studentfinance@puc.edu. If you are on campus, you can stop by the financial building during regular business hours:

Monday – Thursday: 8am-12pm & 1-4pm

Friday: 9am – 12pm
