Jaylyn Drennon is one of PUC’s newest Pioneers. A business major from Port Charlotte, Florida, she plays middle blocker and pin hitters for the women’s volleyball team. One of the biggest reasons Jaylyn chose to attend PUC was the smaller class sizes and the professors’ accessibility.
“I’ve always learned better in more one-on-one settings,” she said. “Being at a school where I can connect more closely with my professors really helps me stay focused and learn better. Additionally, the campus is beautiful. I just love the atmosphere. It feels peaceful and motivating at the same time.”
How has attending PUC benefited your education and future career?
PUC has given me the chance to really focus on my academics with the support I need to succeed. Being able to have close relationships with my professors has helped me stay on track and get the most out of my business major. It’s setting me up with a strong foundation for whatever I decide to do after college.
What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers community?
The support system. Everyone here, teammates, coaches, professors, and classmates wants to see you succeed. There’s a real sense of community and encouragement, and that’s something I truly value.
What values have you gained by being on the team?
Being on the team has taught me the importance of energy and support. Even when I’m not feeling my best, I’ve learned how important it is to keep the court energy high. That means pushing myself to stay positive and uplifting for my teammates. It’s made me a better teammate and person overall.
How do you bond with your teammates outside of practices and games?
We love to eat! Food is our favorite hobby, outside of volleyball. Whether it’s going out to grab something or just spending time together over a meal, it’s how we connect and unwind as a team.
How do you balance your time between school and sports?
It’s definitely a challenge, but I’ve found that staying off my phone helps a lot. I don’t really have a heavy social life when I’m trying to stay focused. When I know I need to get things done, I make it a point to put the phone down and lock in on what needs to be done whether that’s school or volleyball.
How has becoming a college athlete impacted your life?
Being a college athlete has made me more disciplined and aware of how I manage my time and energy. It’s taught me resilience, teamwork, and how to stay committed to something bigger than myself. It’s definitely helped me grow in every area of life.
What’s your pregame ritual?
I like to listen to music to get in the zone. I also take a moment to visualize the game, how I want to play, and how I want to support my team. It helps me stay mentally focused and ready.
Who is your favorite athlete?
I really admire athletes who are known for their energy and leadership, like Simone Biles. She’s strong, powerful, and confident and she carries herself with grace, even under pressure. I look up to that kind of presence.
What advice can you share for high school students interested in being a college athlete?
Stay focused and be ready to manage your time. It’s not always easy, but if you stay dedicated and surround yourself with people who push you to be better, you’ll thrive. And don’t be afraid to ask for help academically or athletically.
Outside of sports, what are other things you are passionate about?
I’m really passionate about personal growth and helping others. Whether that’s through business or just being someone people can talk to, I want to use my skills to make a difference. I also enjoy fashion and creative outlets that let me express myself.
Describe your perfect weekend at PUC.
My perfect weekend would probably be a nice hike t o see the waterfall then maybe some good pasta at the cafe then pingpong or something fun with some of the girls then sleeping in.
