Q&A with Campus Chronicle Journalist: Natalie Nakanishi

With an interest in writing, sophomore psychology and business major Natalie Nakanishi wanted to experience the field of journalism as her curiosity grew since being in college. During winter quarter, she joined PUC’s Campus Chronicle and has been a journalist for the paper since then. Natalie kindly answered some questions for us to learn about her experience.

What are the top three things you look for in a potential story?

The top three things I look for in a story is seeing what news needs to be shared around PUC. Then I try to find something that interests me, or I find something important to write about. The other thing I look for is if I can write it before the deadline.

What’s your writing process? How long do you have until you need to submit your story?

My writing process is I first develop questions for potential people I may interview and then I interview them and then write the story. I have two weeks to submit my story as we publish every two weeks.

Based on your experience as a journalist, what have you learned about writing?

As a journalist I have learned that you just have to get ideas down, that it does not have to be perfect while you are in the drafting stage. Once you start writing, it becomes easier to get your flow. I learned that you should just sit down and write and that what you want to say will come to you.

Are there any upcoming PUC events or profiles you are excited to write?

With it being the end of the quarter, I haven’t thought much into it. However, one day I would like to write a story about why PUC should start back up their agricultural program, as PUC has a farm and a means of doing so.

Can you share the biggest story you’ve written so far?

I’ve only been with CC for only a bit. However, one of the bigger stories I wrote on was about PUC’s Vox Music and Chamber group going to Salt Lake City to tour and to do PR work.

How do you like working and collaborating with your team?
I like working and collaborating with my team. They are an amazing group of individuals who are very encouraging and uplifting as well as helpful. They are very supportive and if you’re stuck, they offer to help one another.

What advice do you have for students interested in applying for the CC? What are the requirements?

My advice to students interested in applying for CC is to do it! It is an amazing opportunity, and you are able to work with really great people who are so encouraging and supportive. The requirements of applying for CC is that you can write, you aren’t afraid of talking to people, you can meet deadlines and that you are a team player.

What is your favorite thing about being a part of PUC’s Campus Chronicle?

My favorite thing about being a part of CC is meeting new people and being a part of such an amazing supportive group of people.

Does the CC accept pitch ideas or articles from other students?

Yes! The CC accepts pitches and ideas from other students. We love and look forward to having them give us ideas and articles!
