Maxwell Scholar Profile: Alexis Villarreal

Theology major Alexis Villarreal is one of PUC’s 2023-2024 Maxwell Scholars. He grew up in Yuba City, CA, and comes from a family of six and is the oldest of four. After graduating from Sutter Union High School, Alexis did not plan to attend college- however, a loved one made him realize the potential he had, and it changed his mind, which brought him to PUC.

What does receiving the Maxwell Scholarship mean to you and your college journey?

In receiving the Maxwell Scholarship, it has shown me God’s hand. The scholarship has helped me advance in my journey to gain knowledge with a foundation of Christ.

What do you want people to know about PUC’s theology program?

Once you have the calling, do not hesitate to join theology. You will be accepted with open arms and compassionate hearts, and having a deeper relationship with Christ will naturally come as you explore the scriptures with your professors.

What do you do when you don’t feel motivated?

At times when my energy has depleted, I remember my family and how I must set an example for my younger siblings. Remembering my family always motivates me.

When you aren’t studying, what kinds of activities or hobbies do you enjoy?

When homework is finished, I love spending time with friends. Knowing that their work ethics and mentalities are different than mine interests me to connect with them.

What’s your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers family?

The Pioneers family is welcoming and supportive. They all make sure I feel at home. If there are any struggles present in my life, there is always someone I can turn to. At times, it can get hard to express your faith, but here, I can allow it to grow without having a second thought. I no longer need to hide my faith because I know this family has my back.

If you had one piece of advice to give academy or high school students, what would it be?

If I had any piece of advice, I would say that working hard will pay off. Having a great work ethic will get you far in your educational journey.
