Senior Jayleen Casillas is a social work major from Victorville, CA. She decided to attend PUC after having the opportunity to play soccer at the college and transferred during her sophomore year. “I figured a new start would be the best thing I could do for myself at that time, so I took the chance, and I do not regret it at all,” shared Jayleen.
What do you like the most about your program?
I like that the social work program is very inclusive. The moment I changed my major from kinesiology to social work, the social work department was extremely welcoming.
I love the sense of community and how personable my advisor, Damaris Perez, is. She helped me so much with the transition, and I am forever grateful for her. There is so much support in this program.
What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers family?
My favorite part about being a part of the Pioneers family is how close we are to the community, especially athletics. Soccer players come two months before everyone else, and we have team dinners at community members’ homes, which has been amazing. They feed us amazing food, and after 2-3 practices a day, a home-cooked meal is the absolute best.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
I would love to go to Spain because the scenery looks gorgeous and their food looks amazing. I would love to try it all. On top of that, I would love to see the Barcelona soccer stadium.
What is something you’re passionate about?
I am extremely passionate about mental health, which explains why I am a social work major. The mental health field is constantly evolving, and I would love to be a good source of support for people who are struggling with their mental health. My end goal is to be a therapist for adolescents.
Do you have a favorite restaurant in the Napa Valley?
I have not eaten at many restaurants in Napa, but Brasswood is pretty good. I like their pizza and mozzarella.
How would you describe your perfect weekend at PUC?
My perfect weekend at PUC would look like waking up before sunrise and going for a walk or drive with my friends to a nice viewpoint. Maybe go to St. Helena afterward and get breakfast at Gillwoods cafe.
