Jacob Duran is a theology sophomore student from San Diego, CA. After receiving a scholarship from his church conference to study theology, he knew he would be attending PUC. “What I appreciate most about my program is that we learn more than just conceptual theology; we learn how it looks practically,” Jacob shared. “The school and the church offer many opportunities throughout the school year to get our feet wet in ministry, something I not only learn from but enjoy!”
How would you describe your perfect weekend at PUC?
A perfect weekend for me at PUC begins with going to Vespers on Friday night, then singing and playing a couple of songs afterward with Leila and Mika. Sabbath morning, I’d head to church, enjoy praising with others, and receive the word from God through Pastor Nate. For lunch, I’d enjoy a home-cooked meal at Dr. T’s or Pastor Nate’s. Then, I’d walk around town or through the Back 40 with Bethanee or spend some time in Paulin Hall playing the piano. Come Saturday night, a movie sounds nice, or so does going to Black Bear Diner with Jonathan and Alexis!
Sunday morning, I like to eat breakfast with Beth. Then, the rest of the day would consist of me being productive with homework, trying to be productive, or just giving up and deciding to spend my time playing Minecraft. That is a perfect weekend for me at PUC!
What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers family?
During my time here at PUC, one thing I appreciate is the ability to be real with others in the Pioneer family. We all experience waves of emotions. I’ve interacted with friends, teachers, and staff, such as Dr. Rachelle Davis, Chaplain Arturo Lopez, and Kharolynn Smith, to name a few. I felt as though I could express my joys, frustrations, and sadness. As someone who wears his heart on his sleeve, I’m grateful that the Pioneer family embraces that of me.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
I would visit places like Israel, Greece, or Rome. Places that can be found in the Bible. Haha, I feel like those are such “theology major” responses, but it’s true! I think it’d be cool to walk the roads that Jesus, the disciples, and Paul walked.
What is something you’re passionate about?
Anyone who knows me knows that I love music! Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. I love to listen to and create music. I believe it has the power to break down barriers and connect people in a way that not a lot of things can.
Do you have a favorite restaurant in the Napa Valley? What is your order recommendation?
I have three answers to this question. For a feel-good time with your friends at any time during the day, a good option is Black Bear Diner. For good breakfast food, I’d recommend Café Sarafornia in Calistoga. I love a classic breakfast, so I go with their steak and eggs. Lastly, a good dinner option would be Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen in Saint Helena. I love their lamb tikka masala! And if you love spice, order it with their highest level of spice!
