Faces of PUC: Abiel Irving

Coming from Tallahassee, FL, Abiel Irving chose to attend PUC because it would be a new and diverse environment, award the most financial aid, and help her apply to Loma Linda Medical School. As a junior psychology and pre-law student with a minor in chemistry, Abiel likes that everything in her program is people-oriented.
“It’s very interesting to learn why we think a particular way, what causes us to behave in certain situations, what strongly influences our beliefs, and much more,” she said. “I believe understanding why and how individuals think and react will positively aid my career as a lawyer.”
What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers family?
The sports games and events. I love to watch sports, particularly basketball and volleyball. It’s fun to cheer and yell for our teams, whether they’re winning or not. Sometimes, just showing up is enough, and I plan to bring the energy and unapologetically represent it with green and gold.
Are there events or activities this school year you are looking forward to?
I am looking forward to the banquet and Six Flags this year. I wasn’t able to go last school year because of my schedule, and a few of my friends are seniors. Now that I’m academically flexible, I’d like to attend as many events as possible with them before they graduate.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
South Korea! I am an Asian culture enthusiast, especially Korean. I love Korean culture, from the savory food to the traditional clothing to the beautiful language to the scenery to the music. I enjoy listening to K-Pop, and my favorite group is BTS.
What is something you’re passionate about?
I am passionate about being positive, kind, and energetic to those I meet. Whether it’s making someone smile or laugh, encouraging them, or giving them a hug, it brings me joy to see people happy. Life can be stressful and overwhelming, but laughter is the best medicine. I always strive to make someone’s day brighter.
Do you have a favorite restaurant in the Napa Valley? Where and what is your order recommendation?
It’s not my favorite restaurant, but my favorite fast food is Taco Bell! I always get 2-3 spicy soft potato tacos without cheese, mild sauce packets, and, if there’s a new or seasonal flavor, a freeze. If not, I usually get the wild strawberry freeze.
How would you describe your perfect weekend at PUC?
My perfect weekend involves doing laundry, preparing for the upcoming week, and hanging out with friends. There’s something about smelling fresh clothes out of the washer and folding them from the dryer that’s calming. Prepping makes me feel organized and in control; it gives me satisfaction. Spending time with my favorite humans makes me elated. There’s never a dull moment, and I appreciate the memories that come along with them.
