Spencer Gibb is finishing the last year of his undergraduate program as a biology pre-dentistry major. What he appreciates the most about PUC’s biology department is how supportive everyone is and how much they helped him grow more than he could on his own.
Before he graduates, Spencer answers some questions to give a glimpse into his experience in his program.
Why did you choose this major?
I originally thought biology would be a good choice for preparing me for graduate school. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by the intriguing classes available, ranging from neuroscience to histology.
What made you decide to attend PUC?
When I was applying to college, PUC was a no-brainer. I had visited the school several times during my high school years at yearbook publication workshops and other similar events.
My father also went to PUC, which definitely played a factor in my decision. The campus is close to home, so visiting for the weekend is not out of the question if I ever feel the need to. A combination of all these factors helped make my desire to go to PUC come to a realization.
How do you receive support from your department?
One way I receive support from the biology department is through the staff. They do an excellent job of helping me through any tough times and helping me plan for my future. Their wisdom is invaluable in applying to graduate school and mapping out my path ahead.
How has studying at PUC benefited your education, future, and personal growth?
Being at PUC definitely benefited my education. It allowed me to (form personal relationships with professors which) get access to teachers that would be unheard of at a larger school while still getting a quality education. PUC has definitely been an amazing launching pad for my future career. I have definitely grown during my time here at PUC and it has helped me stay close to God even when I have many other things going on in my life.
How do you stay motivated through your studies?
Honestly my motivation comes from wanting to do the best I can. I never want there to be any doubt in my mind whether or not I could have done better. Doing well is motivating but coming just short is even more so. If I don’t do well on a particular assignment, I don’t chalk it up to bad luck. I acknowledge my lack of preparation and do everything in my power to live up to the standard I set for myself.
What class from your program have you taken that every student should take regardless of major?
I would recommend taking Home greenhouse gardening. You get to learn how to grow your very own plants, which is awesome. Being able to care for and the plants home with you as well as seeing them grow is an awesome experience.
What do you like the most about being a part of the Pioneers community?
My favorite part of being part of the Pioneer community is being with so many great people. There are so many incredible people here that even if I don’t talk to them every day, I know I can count on them.
Can you give any advice to high school students who are interested in pursuing your major? What should they expect or prepare for?
If I could give one piece of advice to incoming biology majors, it would be to get involved as much as you can. There are so many opportunities you have as a biology major, from becoming a teaching assistant to a tutor to getting involved in clubs and much more.
Incoming biology majors should prepare to study. I am sure this goes for most majors, but in biology, the foundation you build in the beginning can help you a lot in future classes and any standardized tests you may take for graduate school.
