Nyllah Safotu is a senior kinesiology and education major. She chose these majors since she wanted to study exercise science with the intention of being a teacher. “Health and exercise are two very important things to me that I think are valuable for kids to learn about,” said Nyllah.
What made you decide to attend PUC?
When looking for colleges, I wanted to find one with kinesiology and education programs that I liked. I had a few friends that went through both programs and they recommended it because of the quality of education they received from their professors. In addition to that, I had a lot of scholarship opportunities from PUC that truly helped me to solidify my decision in attending.
What do you appreciate the most about your program?
I appreciate the constant support that I receive from my professors. They are not only there to help me learn, but succeed and grow in my academic journey also.
How do you receive support from your department?
My professors have supported me in my education in both big and small ways. I feel their support when they answer all my extra questions after class and invite my classmates to their houses for home-cooked meals. They are especially supportive in helping us prepare for and search for job opportunities after graduation.
How has studying at PUC benefited your education, future, and personal growth?
At PUC, the quality of my education has been excellent. My professors are interested in educating me holistically. This is important to me because they see more than just a student. They see a young adult trying to figure out life and who they intentionally keep in their prayers and offer support. PUC has been a community for me to lean on in my pursuit of higher education and independence.
How do you stay motivated through your studies?
As hard as I push myself in my studies, I also recognize that I need breaks. I make sure to work hard, go to classes, and stay on top of homework throughout the week. However, as soon as the weekend hits, I do not touch any homework at all.
Instead, I’ll hang out with friends and go on mini road trips. It’s important for me to know when to work hard, but also know that I can allow myself to play hard also.
What class from your program have you taken that every student should take regardless of major?
I recommend every student take health education. It is a class required by both of my departments, and it is a beneficial class for students to take to learn general information about their health. The class puts exercise and wellness into an entirely new perspective that any individual can benefit from.
What do you appreciate the most about being a part of the Pioneers community?
I appreciate that I was able to find community within the Pioneers community. It was easy for me to find friends and receive support from professors. The community was very receptive and welcoming of me.
What advice can you share with high school students interested in pursuing your major?
Shadow, observe, and do internships with people in the field or job you are interested in pursuing. Don’t settle for just asking one person’s opinion about their experience. Get a comprehensive understanding of your ideal job so you can see various perspectives of it.
Taking classes in college and actually doing the job in-person may be two completely different things. When you begin classes for your major, develop a relationship with your professors and make friends with people in your major. This will help you feel more comfortable asking for help and finding people to study with.
