Introducing Dr. Tamara Tirado: New Dean of Nursing & Health Sciences

PUC is happy to announce Dr. Tamara Tirado as the new dean of the nursing and emergency sciences department. With this year being her 17th year at PUC and Angwin being her hometown, Tamara is well-known within her department and community. Before becoming the new dean, she served a variety of roles, such as a nursing instructor and director of the BSN program.

As Dean of Nursing and Emergency Services, Tamara oversees all of PUC’s nursing programs, supports faculty and staff, manages operations and compliance, and provides strategic direction. She is also responsible for accreditation, clinical partnerships, grant oversight, and ensuring the programs remain student-focused and outcomes-driven.

She graduated with her AS and BSN from PUC, then went on to gain her master Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner from Sonoma State University, and received her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Loma Linda University.

“As a PUC alumna, I was drawn back by the college’s mission and close-knit community,” Tamara shared. “I chose to work here because I believe deeply in the power of faith-based education and the meaningful way PUC prepares nurses to care with both skill and heart.”

How has it been transitioning from being a professor to being the dean?

It has been a meaningful transition. I have enjoyed expanding my scope of influence and being able to support others from a leadership perspective. My years in the classroom give me valuable insight into what faculty and students need to be successful, and I carry that with me in this role.

What’s your vision for your departments?

My vision is to foster excellence across all of our programs—academically, clinically, and professionally—while creating a learning environment where students and faculty thrive. I want our graduates to be known not only for their clinical competence but also for their compassion, integrity, and leadership.

What has been your favorite thing about being the dean?

I love solving complex problems that make things better for students and faculty. Whether it’s designing a more efficient process, mentoring a new instructor, or helping a student find a clinical placement, I find fulfillment in the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our programs strong.

What do you appreciate the most about working at PUC?

PUC feels like home. I appreciate the sense of purpose that underlies everything we do here. There is a genuine care for students, a commitment to service, and a shared belief in helping each person grow academically and spiritually.

How do you think PUC is unique from other colleges and universities?

Our combination of academic rigor, spiritual mission, and strong relationships sets us apart. At PUC, students are not just a number. They are seen, supported, and challenged to grow in ways that extend far beyond the classroom.

What would you like people to know about your departments?

Our nursing programs are led by experienced faculty who care deeply about their students. We offer a supportive, mission-driven environment that prepares graduates for the real-world demands of healthcare while nurturing their professional and personal development.

Do you have a favorite place to eat in the Napa Valley? If so, where and what is your order recommendation?

Yes, Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen in St. Helena is a favorite of mine. I always order the Auli Cauli Kerau. It is packed with flavor and always satisfying.

Where is your dream vacation?

My dream vacation is Greece. I have always been drawn to its history, breathtaking coastlines, and vibrant culture. Among the places I have visited, Maui holds a special place in my heart because its beauty, warmth, and calm are unforgettable.

What would students be surprised to find out about you?

Students might be surprised to know that I enjoy re-creating plant-based versions of classic comfort foods. It’s one of my favorite ways to relax and be creative outside of work.

What keeps you at PUC?

The people. I stay because I believe in our mission, and I see the impact we make every day in the lives of our students. I am proud to be part of a community that values growth, faith, and service.
