From Portland, Oregon, PUC alum Tony Nakashima returned to his alma mater this past July to become the college’s new athletic director. One of the main reasons he returned to Angwin was his positive PUC experience as a student, which he had before graduating with a marketing degree in 2010.
With Tony’s first school year as athletic director, he looks forward to watching PUC’s teams play and getting to know the student-athletes, building connections, and supporting them to the best of his ability while making as many improvements as possible.
Tony answered some questions for us to learn more about PUC’s athletic department and himself.
What are your goals for PUC’s athletic department this year?
Develop the Student-Athlete as a whole (spiritually, academically, athletically, and personally), enhance the student-athlete experience, use athletics as a ministry, be Competitive, collaborate and work with other departments on campus.
What do you appreciate about your department?
Our staff and all the coaches work hard. They pour so much into the Student-Athletes and deeply care for them.
How do you think PUC athletics stands out from other colleges and universities?
We have a unique combination of academic excellence, strong community values, and a holistic approach to student-athlete development. Coaches, faculty, and staff are deeply invested in the success of each student-athlete, fostering not only athletic growth but also leadership, character, and academic achievement. Our emphasis on faith, integrity, and service creates a culture where sportsmanship and personal development are just as important as competition.
Why should students consider playing at PUC?
We have some amazing coaches who truly care about their student-athletes and are about to do some amazing things. They should consider us because we are building something special here.
What has surprised you the most about the Napa Valley since moving to PUC?
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the strong sense of community here. People have been so welcoming, supportive, and genuinely invested in one another.
Do you have a favorite place to eat in the Napa Valley?
I’m still trying to figure that out. I haven’t had as much time to try new restaurants, but my staples are Tra Vigne, Giugnis, and Rutherford Grill.
Where is your dream vacation?
Japan, because I am Japanese and have yet to visit.
What would students be surprised to find out about you?
I have torn both of my Achilles tendons.
What is your favorite aspect of being part of the Pioneers community?
The people, for sure. When I first arrived, a group welcomed me at my house and offered me snacks and goodies. I’ve also been invited to people’s homes for lunches and dinners. It’s been great getting to know everyone, and everyone has been so welcoming.
Finish this sentence: On Sunday mornings, you can find me…
doing chores around the house.
