PUC offers the academic support you need to succeed

There are several invaluable academic resources at your disposal when you’re a PUC student. If you’re struggling with something, it’s important to remember you aren’t alone. There are people in place who are available to answer your questions or provide you with information — you only need to ask for help. The Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) offers free group tutoring Sunday through Thursday for more than 25 different courses, ranging from business to languages to science. There’s even a writing lab available to students who would like input and direction on writing papers, which is awesome! PUC also has a disabilities support coordinator who can work with students who need certain accommodations. Our Career & Counseling Center has a career counselor who loves talking with students about career options as well as helping with resume preparation, interview skills, and more.

You will also find your professors to be an invaluable resource as you progress on your academic journey. With a 12:1 student-teacher ratio, your professors will know you. The one-on-one attention you receive in and out of the classroom will help make you a much more successful student. You will also be assigned an advisor in the area you’re studying. For example, if you’re planning to study business, your advisor will be a professor in the department of business (helpful, right?). Your advisor knows the ins and outs of their department’s programs and will be a great source for any questions you have about what classes you should take, what major you should consider for your career path, and more. Every quarter your advisor will need to approve your schedule, which is a great safety net for making sure you stay on track to complete your degree.

PUC is small enough to get involved yet large enough to have opportunities

One of the advantages of attending a liberal arts college like PUC is it’s large enough to have countless leadership opportunities and special events, yet it’s small enough where you can get involved with as much as you want. You can serve as a Student Association officer, on the Student Senate, or as a resident assistant in one of the residence halls. You can also start a praise team or join a campus ministry group, or you can make an impact in places like Fiji, Nicaragua, Brazil, and more by going on a short or long term mission trip. Whatever you’re interested in, there’s something for you at PUC.

We are committed to working together with you and your family to make a high-quality Adventist college experience possible. Each year, PUC awards over $30 million in financial aid to our students. This year, we are proud to announce a new scholarship, just for transfer students, called the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) Scholarship, worth $1,500, in recognition of community college students who wish to earn a baccalaureate degree from a four-year institution. It is awarded to transfer students who are graduating from a California community college with an Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or an Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T).

A Student’s Perspective on Transferring to PUC

Choosing a college is a big decision but deciding you need a change and transferring to a different college may be even bigger! While it can be an incredibly daunting thought, you’re not alone. Each quarter PUC has many students transfer in, and our college staff is happy to help students throughout the process.

Below, Abigail Daniliuc, a biology pre-dentistry student who transferred from CSU Sacramento, shares her experience about transitioning to PUC.

What made you decide to transfer to PUC?

I came to PUC because I wanted to be in a Christian environment, experience living in a dorm, and complete my upper division science classes in a smaller classroom setting where professors were accessible not only during their office hours, but also after hours, like on the weekends. I enjoy the close knit family I have created here at PUC that fosters not only my spiritual growth through gatherings like department pre-vespers but academic growth as well. We are likeminded and have the common goal of going to dental school, preferably at Loma Linda. The scenery here at PUC is also relaxing and I love being surrounded by mountains and vineyards.

How was the transfer process for you?

I was lucky enough to have Dr. Wyrick from the department of biology and Mrs. Igdaly Patel in the Enrollment Services office help me during the transfer process. I decided to come to PUC last minute during the holidays and was able to communicate with them both effortlessly. They gave me suggestions in regards to what classes I should take, what clubs to be apart of, and what dorm would be better suited for me to live in. I feel blessed because of how accessible the faculty and staff are here at PUC.

What advice would you give someone considering transferring to PUC?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions because everyone is very kind and will help you with whatever they can. I wish I visited during Transfer Days because I could have experienced PUC firsthand. However, I had a private tour of the campus before I transferred here and that helped me to feel more comfortable once I began.

So far, what’s been your favorite part about being a student at PUC?

It’s my third quarter at PUC and I’m reminded the mornings are my favorite here. I live in McReynold’s Hall and love how quiet it is. I also love walking to class in the morning and seeing the campus from a bird’s eye view. Lastly, I really enjoy my classes, mainly because of the small class sizes and Christ-centered environment. We always pray before we start lectures and before taking tests. It helps to set my intention for the day and keeps me grounded and aware that me transferring to PUC was meant to happen. I hope you can tell I’m very happy to be here!

We Want You at PUC This Spring!

If you missed the deadline to come to PUC for this past winter quarter, don’t worry! You still have a chance to transfer for the spring, which starts on Monday, March 30th. There’s plenty of time for you to get things together to be at PUC. Below is information I hope is helpful for anyone looking to transfer this coming quarter or sometime in the near future.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students
You can learn about PUC’s admissions requirements for transfer students and what we consider to be a completed transfer student application here.

Completing Your Application
Our office gets a lot of questions from students asking us how soon they can expect to hear back from us about a decision. It’s completely up to you how quickly you get your documents to us! As soon as the Admissions Office has all the documents needed for your application, your file will be reviewed for acceptance. If you’re accepted, you will receive an email that day notifying you of the decision, with more information following in the mail.

Checking Your Application Status
You’re able to track your application status by creating your WebAdvisor account. This account allows you to track the arrival of your transcripts, reference and test scores, as well as documents needed by other departments, like financial and health forms. WebAdvisor is also what you will use to register for classes. Learn more by reading our blog post “The Basics of Your WebAdvisor Account.”

Your Program Evaluation
After you’ve been accepted, you will need to pay a $150 enrollment fee in order to register for classes. Once this fee is paid, your transcripts will be taken to our Records office for a degree evaluation which will show what credits transfer, and if anything doesn’t. When your program evaluation is completed, it will be available on your WebAdvisor account, along with contact information for your advisor. Take some time to look at how it applies to your degree requirements, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask your advisor. Transfer Student Orientation
The last step is easy – you just need to get here! The day before each quarter begins, there’s a short orientation for new transfer students to help you get to know other new students and to go over information you’ll find helpful as a student at PUC.

Change: A Transfer Student’s Guide

CHANGE! How many of us are worried about change? Oftentimes we experience a nervous feeling in our stomach because of the unknown. Many colleges place a lot of emphasis primarily on their incoming freshman class, making sure their transition from high school into college life is seamless. But why do we forget about transfer students?

We must keep in mind transfer students go through major changes as well. For these students, leaving home or another college for a new academic environment can be scary as they enter a new campus culture. Meeting new people and getting acquainted with a new school environment can be very challenging to say the least. However, it is a good thing to be challenged out of your comfort zone, and embark upon new territory and start that college journey. Even though at times it may seem easier to stay where you are, there are many benefits that come with change.

Working closely with transfer students this year has helped me learn more about the types of questions that are most important in the process of transferring. Below, I have listed the top three questions that transfer students consistently ask me.

1. Are my credits transferable?

Finding out if your credits are transferable is probably the determining factor for most transfer students. Some potential transfer students are under the impression their credits will automatically transfer over towards their major. However, this is not always the case and there are no guarantees courses will be transferable. I always encourage students to research the institution they want to transfer over to. Take a look at their course catalog. You can get an idea of how many of your credits could potentially be applied towards your major by simply exploring the PUC general catalog. You can also contact our Records Office before taking a course at another school to make sure we will accept those credits. Speak to your academic advisor at your school and the school you’re planning to transfer to.  Keep in mind each school reserves the right to accept or reject credits earned at another institution.

2. How and when can I register for classes?

Once you’ve been accepted to PUC, our Records Office will complete a degree audit/evaluation of your transcripts, and when it’s completed, it will be available on your WebAdvisor account where you can see how your transfer credits apply to your degree requirements at PUC. Based on your chosen major and/or pre-professionals goals, an academic advisor will be assigned to you and they will assist you on setting up your class schedule. They will also suggest to you any academic success strategies and answer any questions you may have regarding our academic policies. Once you have discussed and planned your class schedule with your advisor, you can register for classes using your WebAdvisor account. 3. Do we offer scholarships for transfer students?

Cost is another huge determining factor for whether or not a student decides to transfer to a different college. PUC offers scholarships for transfer students, and one such scholarship is the Academic Achievement Scholarship for transfer students. This scholarship is solely based on your college cumulative GPA, and all you need to do is submit your academic transcript to the Admissions office. There’s also an unbelieveable amount of scholarships available to college students on websites and search engines. There’s still plenty of time for you to do everything necessary to become a PUC student this year. Winter quarter starts on Monday, January 5th and spring quarter on Monday, March 30th.
