Faculty Feature: Matthew Evens

Nebraska native Matthew Evens has been an assistant kinesiology professor at PUC since the fall quarter of 2022. He’d been curious about being a college professor, even though it was not his end goal to get a master’s degree in kinesiology. It just happened to be available, and now he’s qualified. “God definitely led us here,” said Matthew. “He closed all other doors to jobs closer to family, so I know this is where he wants us to be for the time being.”

What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers family?

The community. I heard it takes a village to raise a child, and the pastors, staff, faculty, and students have been amazing help for myself and my family. We also enjoy supporting and going to games in the gym.

What is your favorite class to teach?

My favorite class to teach is motor learning because it has a lot of labs where I get to see how the brain learns and retains physical actions.

Do you have a favorite place to eat in the Napa Valley?

Wow, we don’t eat out because it is too expensive. If I do have the opportunity we enjoy Tra Vigne, but if it’s a town run, Subway, or Domino’s Pizza.

What would students be surprised to find out about you?

Probably that I am a cancer survivor twice over.  God has definitely blessed me with relatively easy cancer battles but it was still scary.  I was finishing chemo when I came here for my interview and I was bald.

Where is your dream vacation?

A family vacation, a nice resort, someone to cook for us… Oh, wait, just bring the grandparents and then golfing a couple of times..

Finish this sentence: On Sunday mornings you can find me…

playing blocks/trains or firewood with my 2-year-old son, but dreaming of playing Sunday morning basketball in the gym.
