When Derek delos Reyes decided where to begin his undergraduate education, he did not think it would be PUC. During his last year of high school in Sacramento, he visited colleges and asked God for guidance on where to go to school. With PUC being last on his list, it was the only place he felt he could call home. As a freshman pre-nursing student, it has been so far.
What do you like the most about your program?
I love the vastness of it all. Nursing is one of the biggest programs at PUC, and it’s incredible to see all the students, faculty, and department continue to thrive and grow. Although I’m only a pre-nursing student, this only further inspires me to continue what I’m doing and to keep working hard for what’s to come!
What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers family?
How easy it is to connect with people. Since we’re a small school stuck on a hill, there’s a lot of opportunity to find and connect with people. As you go throughout the day, you’re bound to encounter familiar faces repeatedly. At some point, it’s weird not to say hello after seeing them so many times, haha!
What event are you looking forward to this school year?
Nursing Acceptance Day
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
Probably Sacramento right now. I miss my family haha.
What is something you’re passionate about?
My collection of keychains on my backpack. I joke about how it’s my biggest achievement to date. A lot of people like to point out that my backpack is filled with a bunch of different stuffed animals and trinkets. But many people don’t know these keychains are from friends and family. It’s a constant reminder of all the people supporting me as I start this new chapter of life!
What is your favorite restaurant in the Napa Valley, and what is your order recommendation?
Hop Hing’s Chinese Restaurant. Anything on that menu. They’ll fill that plate enough for you to go the next few days.
How would you describe your perfect weekend at PUC?
Friday: Lunch is Avocado Toast. Then I take a nap, go to SOL club pre-vespers, go to vespers, and go to bed.
Saturday: I go to Sabbath School, where there are croissants, then I go to church, then I go to BSU’s after-church, then I hike to Inspiration Point, then hike back to my dorm and take a nap.
Sunday: I wake up and see that Sushi Bowls are for brunch. I go to eat, say Sushi Bowl, and then I open Outlook and see that I’ve been accepted into the Nursing program.
