PUC’s New Math Professor: Victoria Wambua

PUC is happy to introduce Victoria Wambua as a new faculty member in the math and physics department. As the new math professor, she has had over 10 years of teaching experience in different high schools and universities in the US and Kenya. In 2018, Victoria graduated from Syracuse University with a PhD in mathematics education.

“I had been praying for a full-time position in higher education, specifically in a place where Christ is at the center,” she shared. “When the opportunity at PUC opened up, it felt like a clear answer to that prayer. Every sign affirmed that God was leading me to serve at PUC.”

This fall, Victoria will be teaching college algebra and trigonometry and assisting with the management of the math courses offered through ALEKS. In the winter and spring, she will teach calculus, statistics, and a programming course. When she isn’t teaching, she enjoys spending time with family, crocheting, sewing, gardening, cooking, composing songs, and listening and singing along to Christian music.

Victoria kindly answered some questions for us to get to know more about her.

What do you appreciate about your department?

Though the department is small, I see great potential for growth, and I’m excited to be part of that journey. I appreciate the supportive and collaborative environment, and I’m especially grateful for a chair who is both understanding and encouraging of my professional goals.

How do you think PUC is unique from other colleges and universities?

What makes PUC truly unique is its commitment to integrating faith and learning in a meaningful way. It’s more than just an academic institution—it’s a community where spiritual growth is nurtured alongside intellectual development. PUC is also the most beautiful campus I’ve ever been to; the natural surroundings are breathtaking and create a peaceful atmosphere for learning and reflection. On top of that, the people here are incredibly welcoming and loving, which makes the campus feel like home.

How do you like to begin your classes?

I like to begin my classes with a warm greeting and a quick check-in with my students—it’s important to me to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. I also take a moment to pray with them before starting the lesson, inviting God’s presence into our time together. Academically, I start by checking students’ prior knowledge related to the day’s concept, often through questions, warm-up problems, or quick surveys. This helps me connect new material to what they already know and tailor my instruction accordingly.

What would students be surprised to find out about you?

Students might be surprised to learn that I speak five languages and enjoy sewing, crocheting, singing, and watching soccer. I ‘quietly’ support Arsenal in the Premier League and Real Madrid in La Liga, so following both teams is a fun part of my life.

What has surprised you the most about the Napa Valley since moving to PUC?

What has surprised me the most about the Napa Valley is how peaceful and scenic it is. I expected it to be beautiful, but I didn’t realize just how refreshing and calming the environment would be—it truly feels like a retreat. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by how friendly and welcoming the community is, both on and off campus. It’s a wonderful place to live, work, and grow.

Do you have a favorite place to eat in the Napa Valley?

Yes, Chipotle is my favorite place to eat in the Napa Valley. As a vegan who enjoys simple, filling, and budget-friendly meals, it’s the perfect choice for me. I especially love their burrito bowl with sofritas, topped with guacamole and lettuce—it’s fresh, flavorful, and absolutely mouthwatering!

Where is your dream vacation?

I haven’t traveled to many places yet because, to me, a perfect vacation is simply having time to rest and recharge. However, I’ve recently dreamed of visiting Alaska. I’m drawn to its natural beauty—the chance to see majestic animals, stunning glaciers, and the northern lights would be an unforgettable experience.

What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers community?

My favorite thing about being part of the Pioneers community is the opportunity to build meaningful connections and develop new relationships. I’m grateful to be part of a mission that supports students not only in the classroom but also beyond it. It’s truly rewarding to share Christ’s love with others and to experience that love in return.

What are you looking forward to in the upcoming school year?

I’m looking forward to meeting my students and getting to know them in person. Building strong connections and supporting them throughout their academic journey is very important to me, and I’m excited to make a meaningful contribution to their growth and success this school year.

Finish this sentence: On Sunday mornings, you can find me…

Either taking a walk, at my reading desk studying, in the kitchen preparing my favorite breakfast, or simply enjoying some extra rest by sleeping in.
