Senior Shares Experience as a Health Communication Major

When Benjamin (Benji) Rangel was deciding on a college to attend, PUC was always on his radar since he grew up in an SDA environment, and his brother and mentors encouraged him to go to college. “I often heard about the excellent professors, the strong spiritual atmosphere, and the beautiful campus surrounded by nature—an environment that fosters academic and spiritual growth,” he said.

Benji is now a senior completing the last months of his health communication pre-dentistry program. Before he graduates, he kindly took time to share his program experience with us.

What do you appreciate the most about your program?

What I appreciate most about this program is the supportive professors who genuinely care about their students. They take the time for one-on-one conversations, check in on us, and even bring food to class, making learning more enjoyable. The study spaces they provide are also a great place to focus and collaborate.

Plus, the Communication Club hosts amazing events that bring students together, making the program feel like a real community. The combination of caring faculty, great resources, and fun events has made my experience truly rewarding.

How do you receive support from your department?

The professors in the communication department are incredibly kind and supportive. They genuinely care about their students, regularly checking in through emails and encouraging open discussions. They also provide guidance on selecting classes for the following quarter, making me feel that my input is valued.

How has studying health communication at PUC benefited your education, future, and personal growth?

Studying health communication at PUC has significantly shaped my education, future career, and personal growth. Academically, it has given me the skills to communicate effectively in professional and personal settings.

For my future, it has prepared me to interact with patients and colleagues with empathy and clarity, ensuring better patient outcomes. Personally, it has helped me grow into a more understanding, adaptable, and well-rounded individual.

This program has also strengthened my ability to network and build meaningful relationships, which will be valuable throughout my career.

What communication class have you taken that every student should take regardless of major?

Essential courses every student should take, regardless of their major, are interpersonal communication, organizational communication, and nonverbal communication. These classes provide fundamental skills for building relationships, working in teams, and understanding unspoken messages in everyday interactions.

What do you like the most about being a part of the Pioneers community?

Being part of the Pioneers community has been an incredible experience. The spiritual atmosphere, supportive community, and beautiful environment have made PUC feel like home. I’ve formed lifelong friendships that feel like family. Most importantly, my relationship with Jesus has deepened during my time here. He has provided me with a place where I feel loved, supported, and encouraged to grow both academically and spiritually.

How do you stay motivated through your studies?

Staying motivated in my studies is challenging. There are times when I get ahead of my work and struggle to find the motivation to keep going. Studying has never come easily to me. However, one thing that has helped both my spiritual and academic life is starting each morning with prayer. No matter how tired I am, I wake up at a set time and ask God for the strength to stay focused and motivated. I’ve come to realize that I cannot do it on my own, but through Jesus, I’ve found the discipline and dedication to pursue my studies with purpose.

Can you give any advice to high school students who are interested in pursuing your major?

My advice to high school students considering this major is not to underestimate its value. Some might see health communication as an easier major, but it’s one of the most practical fields of study. It equips you with communication skills that apply to any profession and everyday life. This major will help you network, build deeper relationships, and enhance your ability to express ideas clearly. Expect a fair amount of writing and research, but in the end, it will make you a stronger communicator, a better writer, and a more effective leader in any career path you choose.
