Maxwell Scholar Spotlight: Marilyn Do

Coming from a family of six, receiving PUC’s Maxwell Scholarship for freshman biochemistry student Marilyn Do is not only financially significant but also a source of motivation, propelling her to continue to strive for success. “Being able to represent PUC as a Maxwell Scholar is a great honor,” expressed Marilyn. “It is proof of God’s blessings and the effort I put in.”

What made you choose to attend PUC?

Pacific Union College possessed a multitude of optimal factors that most colleges did not seem to have. For one, the Christ-centered community appealed to my beliefs and ideals. I felt learning in a smaller environment dedicated to Christian morals would supplement my academics and allow me to develop my relationship with God. Also, not having to drive to church every weekend was a plus.

Beyond that, PUC is close enough to drive home–give or take two hours–yet far enough to gain a new perspective and experience. Its location was perfect for what I desired in my collegiate experience.

How do you balance school and social life?

Truthfully, balancing school and social life is something I struggle with from time to time. However, I try to make an effort to talk to people outside my classes for at least 30 minutes every day. Blocking my schedule ahead of time in anticipation of any events, classes, or study time certainly helps me make sure I leave some wiggle room for socialization.

What responsibilities come with being a Maxwell Scholar? How do you handle that?

As a Maxwell Scholar, I do feel pressure to uphold a strong academic record and contribute to the PUC community. In response to stress, I like to remind myself about my goals and talk to others about my worries.

How do you get yourself out of a funk of not feeling motivated?

When I begin to feel unmotivated, I try to immediately change environments. I find that switching to a location that is brighter and surrounded by other students studying is best. In the instance that I still feel indolent, I might take a 15-minute break–either taking a walk, catching up with some friends, or watching a YouTube video. After all, it’s most likely a precursor of burnout, a state that is much worse than temporary unmotivation.

What kind of support do you receive from faculty and staff?

While the PUC faculty and staff provide several kinds of support, I extensively use one in particular–office hours. Being able to meet with professors and staff one-on-one allows me to clear up any academic misunderstandings and helps develop a closer classroom environment.

What do you appreciate the most about your department?

As a student in the Chemistry Department, I truly appreciate the professors’ willingness to answer questions and assist students. At times when I’m feeling lost or confused, it is very easy to communicate my worries and inquiries to them; all the professors are approachable and nice.

When you’re not studying, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy running and organizing my schedules and drawers. At home, I like to cook for my family–whether it be Vietnamese comfort food or experimental fusion dishes. Balancing several cooking tasks at once and being able to witness my family’s reactions to the dish is always a delightful experience.

What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Pioneers community?

My favorite aspect of the Pioneers community is its close-knit environment. It’s comforting being able to see the same people in your classes throughout each quarter. Not only does it allow me to get to know them more over time, but it also results in an increased feeling of support and belonging.

What advice do you have for high school students considering PUC?

For high school students considering PUC, I highly urge you to tour and experience campus life for yourself! There are acres of land for exploration (hiking, running, etc.), a small classroom size to bolster academic growth, and a wonderful community that emphasizes service and fosters relationships.
